Trusted Cloud Computing: A Pioneer’s Vision, History and Practice
Since 1999, we have been pioneering the Information Utility concepts and technologies to provide highly trusted, efficient and cost effective Cloud Computing at both IaaS and PaaS layers. It is based on revolutionary system architecture Supercomputing Grid (Supergrid) with Supergrid Operating System (Supergrid OS), Supergrid Application Interface (Supergrid API), and Supergrid OS enabled internet-access Personal Electronic Terminal devices (Supergrid iPET), designed to deliver pervasive, massive and ubiquitous applications/contents services on the internet (SaaS). We have also engaged in actual system hardware, software and middleware development, system production, delivery and deployment of healthcare, education, biomedical, culture, entertainment, energy and weather forecast applications/contents services on Supergrid in China since 2004.

Our first focused vertical industry is healthcare in China and worldwide: Since 2006, sponsored by China’s central and local governments, in collaboration with our strategic partner company in China (Healthgrid), we have built four national trial sites in China’s rural areas, including farming, ethic minority (e.g. Mongolia, Manchuria and Kazakhstan), and environmental hazardous (e.g. mining and earthquake) communities. Each city has an average population of more than 3 millions, and China has more than 300 cities in rural areas with more than 1 million village (barefoot) doctors. In every village, a doctor provides the basic primary care services for roughly 1000 people, including baby, children, woman, disabled, retired, unemployed, and the fast-growing old-aging population.

The goal is to establish and fine-tune a new and replicable healthcare model, a National Collaborative Healthcare System, for all of the 1.4 billions Chinese people, especially the 900 million people in poor and remote rural communities by the year of 2020. The system, when fully implemented, will provide world-leading collaborative healthcare services delivered on Supergrid, which will be based on standard Personal Health Records (PHR) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to facilitate a highly efficient and cost effective primary care, preventive medicine, emergency care, out-patient, retirement home and in-home care. Also, the system will include early diseases detection and treatment, chronic, contagious and epidemic diseases monitoring and tracking. Furthermore, it will advance integral medicine including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), various ethic minorities’ alternative medicine and western medicine, support hospital clinical trials and biomedical research, and deliver telemedicine and doctors’ on-job training swiftly throughout the whole country.

Currently, the Supergrid services are also being extended to other vertical industries, including education, culture/entertainment, agriculture, logistics, finance, commerce, transportation, environment, etc. Advanced research in science and engineering will include: brain and life science with information medicine, personal medicine such as gene-based cancer/brain diseases early detection and non-invasive therapy, psychoneuroimmunology and pharmacogenomics, 3D modeling/printing for precision surgery, old-aging re-vitalization, integrated body/mind/spirit healing, life-time human-machine (3rd Brain) cognitive, continuous and collaborative learning and decision-making, special education programs for autism, disabled, depressed, bipolar, old-age and dementia patients, natural and man-made disaster forecast, prevention and rescue, environment and epidemic diseases interaction, clean and renewable energy, new material, green aerospace and automotive, environmental pollution and monitoring, global climate change, soil restoration and water purification/conservation, agro-ecological and sustainable organic farming, food sufficiency and safety, smart garden city (neural cell) design and build, etc.

Supergrid is designed to facilitate a pervasive, massive and ubiquitous Information Utility service model with the most advanced Supergrid technologies: systems, platforms and services worldwide to provide highly trusted, efficient and cost effective Cloud Computing to solve science, engineering, social, and economic problems which were not solvable or affordable before.
